Malnutrition/Dehydration:
Under staffing and physical ailments of a resident typically contribute to malnutrition and
dehydration. It is clear that proper nutrition and hydration is essential to maintain the good
health of an elderly resident.
Lack of proper nutrition and hydration can lead to various physical
ailments such as infections, confusion, muscle weakness, pressure sores, infections, renal failure
and death. Homes are typically required through State and Federal Regulations to provide nutritional
assessments upon admission of a resident.
As a family member, you should be aware of the nutritional
needs of your loved one and express those needs to the staff of the home. If your loved one is
experiencing significant weight loss, you should bring this to the attention of the nutritionist or
other staff member immediately.
